the summer programme

‍

BYO has been running a summer programme since the 1980s. The premise is simple – emerging singers, as part of their journey into professionals careers, work on a single sole in its entirety, rehearsing that role all the way through to performances. With guidance from established professionals and the space to really get stuck in, singers improve their confidence, build stronger professional behaviours in a real-word rehearsal environment, and start to build connections with peers and figures in the wider industry.

‍

The 2027 programme

Next summer, BYO will run two parallel summer projects for the first time, each providing something different for participants:

‍

  • Dido and Aeneas – a full-scale production of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas created entirely by participants on the summer programme. Culminates in four performances at Battersea Arts Centre.
  • La Rondine – a 'learn your role' programme, with coaching, a public masterclass with former Royal Opera music director, Sir Antonio Pappano, and a concert performance of the full opera at Saffron Hall with the Cambridge Philharmonic.
    ‍
The environment was incredibly supportive and I felt the creative energy in the room was electric!

‍

who can apply

Anybody is welcome to apply for our singers summer programme, and everyone who applies will be able to audition. The programme involves working on and performing an entire opera, and you'll need to have learnt the music before you arrive on the first day of the programme, so advanced technique is essential.

‍

You should make sure you have the right visa arrangements to complete our programmes.

‍

applications and auditions

To apply, just hit the button at the bottom of this page. There is a single application form for all 2027 programmes for singers, so you'll need to know which programmes you're applying for before you fill out the form. Once you've completed your application you'll receive an email to book your audition – the earlier you apply the more audition slots will be available.

‍

The application form contains space for a personal statement. This is a requirement if you're applying to the Serena Fenwick programme, but optional if you're only applying for the summer programme.

‍

When we've finished all first round auditions, we shortlist applicants. You'll receive an email either inviting you to book a recall audition, or telling you your application is no longer being considered.

faqs

I want to apply to multiple programmes at the same time – what do I do?

All programmes in a career area (eg singing, directing, music staff) share an application form, so you can apply for all of those at the same time. You're also able to apply to programmes in multiple areas – just fill out each application form.
‍

Could I be offered places on multiple singing programmes?

It is possible that you could be offered a place on the Serena Fenwick programme, La Rondine and Dido and Aeneas – the decisions on offering places take place independently. However each programme is offering something different, and you'll only be offered a place where the panel think that matches what you need.
‍

Are there maximum or minimum age requirements?

There is no upper age limit to apply – you just need to be able to show your career would benefit from the training on offer. You must be at least 18 years old to apply for the programme.
‍

What do I need to bring to my audition?

You should prepare three arias for your audition, including one in English. We can't advise you on individual choices, so explain to your singing teacher what you're auditioning for and get their advice.

You don't need to bring your own accompanist.
