What is an artist manager? What do they even do?

Being an artist manager or agent is one of those jobs that people don't often think of when they think of careers in opera, but they're a big part of the classical music and opera ecosystem. So what's rewarding about being an agent? What do they do? And what kind of person would make a good artist manager?
